Conservative commentator Glenn Beck has urged the gay community to back the Republican Party as their last resort.
“The left-wing liberals are so eager not to seem politically they will continue to coddle Muslims,” said Beck on his radio. “The Republican Party will protect the rights of gays.”
Several other Republicans have urged gay Americans to side with them after the Orlando nightclub attacks, which is ironic because the GOP has never been a very gay-friendly environment. Former Republican presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz appeared alongside several preacher who advocated death for gay people. Also, the Religious Right, who are a large part of the GOP electorate, are anti gay. But some Republicans still think they are gay people’s best bet.
“Ask yourself, who really is the friend of women and the LBGT community: Donald Trump with his actions or Hillary Clinton with her words,” said Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
But gay rights activists weren’t convinced.
According to Talking Points Memo, David Stacy, government affairs director of Human Rights Watch, said the GOP was full of people who have shown disdain for gay rights. He was disgusted by the Republicans new outreach to gay people.
“This is just ridiculous, and appalling, and completely and totally insincere,” said Stacy.
