Republican climate deniers often accuse people who believe in global warming of following a religion, however a new church in San Francisco may actually prove them right.
According to SFOnline News, last Sunday saw the opening service of the First Church of Global Warming, which was established by a handful of college professors and former hippies.
“The Earth gives us life and I would rather worship Mother Earth than some Christian sky god,” said Moon Sunbeam, pastor of the First Church of Global Warming.
Church members are serious believers in the green lifestyle. The church has no parking lot and all church members walk or bike to services. Church members also said they plan to hold a ceremony where a SUV is crushed and the parts are sent away to me made into bikes and pens.
Members of the First Church of Global Warming say they also plan to apply for tax exempt status.
Former Republican presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz has called climate change a religion.
“Climate change is not science. It’s religion,” said Cruz in an interview with Glenn Beck. “Look at the language, where they call you a denier. Denier is not the language of science … Any good scientist is a skeptic; if he’s not, he or she should not be a scientist. But yet the language of the global warming alarmists, ‘denier’ is the language of religion, it’s heretic, you are a blasphemer.”
