President Donald Trump announced he was pardoning Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio in a news dump on Friday. The news dump was designed to avoid the headlines but it was still the top story.
However, White House insiders have told the Business Standard News that Trump has further plans for Arpaio, who was one of his earliest supporters.
“Trump wants to find a position for Arpaio in the Border Patrol,” said “Orange Throat,” a White House leaker. “He liked what he did with his tent city.”
Arpaio, a notorious publicity seeker, garnered international notoriety for making jail inmates (many who were not even convicted) sleep in tents in desert temperatures. His jails were also known for ignoring beatings, inmate deaths and serving rotten food.
Arpaio was convicted of contempt of court after he refused a judge’s order to stop racially profiling Latinos.
Trump’s decision to pardon Arpaio has been widely condemned.
Arizona Sen. John McCain said, “Mr. Arpaio was found guilty of criminal contempt for continuing to illegally profile Latinos living in Arizona based on their perceived immigration status in violation of a judge’s orders. The President has the authority to make this pardon, but doing so at this time undermines his claim for the respect of rule of law as Mr. Arpaio has shown no remorse for his actions.”
However, some conservatives supported Trump. FOX News’ Jesse Watters said it wasn’t a big deal because “Obama pardoned crack dealers.”
