Even though the faltering Donald Trump campaign is being hit with accusations of racism, some Republicans are rushing to his defense.
“Donald Trump is not prejudiced, that’s just something cooked up by the liberal media,” said right-wing commentator Ann Coulter. “He just wants to put America first and make sure we keep the right kind of people who made America great. So, he accused Mexicans of being rapists, wants to ban Muslims and black people were beaten up at his rallies, but that doesn’t mean he’s racist.”
Michael Savage, a conservative talk show host, also leapt to Trump’s defense.
“Trump knows that America was at its best in the 1950s, when we were a majority white country,” said Savage, on his radio show. “He wants to get back to that.”
Pat Buchanan, a former Republican presidential candidate, defended Trump in a blog. Trump has been heavily criticized for his comments about U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who is overseeing a case against Trump University, which has been called “a scam.” Trump said that Curiel couldn’t be objective because he was Mexican, however the judge was born in Indiana. Buchanan said Trump has been unfairly branded a racist.
“Trump has a perfect right to be angry about the judge’s rulings and to question his motives,” said Buchanan. “Set aside the folly of letting Clinton surrogates like the (Washington) Post distract him from the message he should be delivering, what did Trump do to be smeared by a bipartisan media mob as a ‘racist?’”
