Supporters of Donald Trump had their knives out for Elaine Quijano, the moderator of Tuesday night’s debate between Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine and Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence. And predictably they attacked her ethnicity. Posters on alt-right hotbed Breitbart accused Quijano of being undocumented.
“I’d like to see her green card,” wrote a poster called RushRules77. “Is she even here legally? I bet she gave Kaine the questions in advance. Mexicans are good at being sneaky. It’s in their blood.”
Posters on the far-right website Free Republic were even worse.
“These debates are a joke. Trump and Pence need to pull out of this fiasco. Riding blind into an ambush is pretty stupid. Having a wetback as a moderator is just disgustingly stupid,” said a poster called GrandJediMasterYoda.
However, Quijano is of Filipino descent and was born and raised in Chicago, Ill.
Trump built his campaign on attacking Mexican migrants and Muslims. But during the debate, Pence denied that happened. He even denied Trump has suggested banning Muslim immigration, even though the reality TV star had previously called for a “complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until we can figure out what is going on.”
