Republican Rep. Steve King has come out in defense of president-elect Donald Trump. Trump’s election victory has been followed by nationwide protests and hundreds of acts of racial violence, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.
But King downplayed that in an interview with the Patriot Media Sentinel.
“The SPLC is a radical left-wing organization that has an agenda. I haven’t seen any evidence of violence acts,” said King. “Trump is a uniter and will bring the country together like Martin Luther King. He will end the war on white people unleashed by the Obama administration. Personally, I hope he continues the investigation into his birth certificate.”
King has also backed the appointment of former Breitbart CEO Steve Bannon, a white nationalist, as Trump’s chief White House strategist.
Bannon, who was accused by his ex wife in court records of making anti-Semitic, comments has drawn fire for referring to liberal women as “a bunch of dykes.” But King still defended him, according to the Huffington Post.
“Well, hadn’t heard that tape, and I don’t know what the context of it would be in,” said King. “So no, I wouldn’t say I was either OK with it or not OK with it.”
King also called Trump’s proposed ban on Muslim immigration an “interesting proposal.”
